Our History

Founding and Early Vision (1965)

Morning Star Baptist Church began on June 14, 1965, when a small group of believers gathered for worship in the home of the church’s first pastor, Rev. James Meadows. Inspired by scripture, Mother Richardson gave the new congregation its name—Morning Star. The church was officially established in August of that same year, marking the beginning of a ministry rooted in faith, fellowship, and community.

A Growing Church on the Move (1965–1976)

As the congregation grew, Morning Star moved several times to accommodate its expanding membership and ministry needs.
  • 1965: 19 Stratton Street, Dorchester
  • 1967: 76 Glenway Street, Dorchester
  • 1968: 133 Harrishof Street, Roxbury—formerly a Jewish synagogue and home to Morning Star for nearly a decade
During this period, the church experienced steady growth and began attracting members from across
Boston, not just the immediate neighborhood.

A Permanent Home in Mattapan (1976)

In 1976, under the leadership of Rev. Walter Stevenson, Morning Star relocated to its current address at 1257 Blue Hill Avenue in Mattapan. The sanctuary seated approximately 300 people and offered room for continued growth. Recognizing the importance of long-term stability, the church purchased the building and property that same year, establishing a permanent home for worship and ministry.

A New Era of Leadership (1981)

In 1981, Reverend John M. Borders, III was installed as Pastor at just 22 years old, becoming the youngest to serve Morning Star. His dynamic preaching, commitment to biblical teaching, and ability to bridge generations ushered the church into its most significant period of growth. Under his leadership, Morning Star expanded its membership, strengthened its ministries, and deepened its impact across Greater Boston.

A Vision Realized: New Worship Center Completed (2004)

As the congregation continued to grow, it became clear that a larger, more functional worship space was needed. Construction began on a new facility at the same 1257 Blue Hill Avenue location, designed to support worship, discipleship, and community outreach on a greater scale. The project was completed in 2004, and Morning Star moved into its newly constructed worship center - a modern, spacious home built to serve a thriving and expanding congregation.

Consecration of Bishop Borders (2010)

A major milestone in Morning Star’s leadership journey came in June 2010, when Rev. Borders was consecrated to the office of Bishop by the International Bishops Conference. This consecration recognized his spiritual leadership, regional influence, and commitment to advancing the Gospel beyond the local congregation. Bishop Borders continues to guide Morning Star with vision, integrity, and a heart for both the church and the surrounding community.
